John Austin directs the Great Lakes Economic Initiative, created to improve the economic vitality of the region. His expertise includes higher education and workforce policy.
The Brookings Institution launched a Great Lakes Initiative - the Vital Center in 2006. Since that time Brookings has conducted several studies of the region and made recommendations for the future.
